Recommendations of the Egyptian Society of Kidney Diseases

Recommendations of the Egyptian Society of Kidney Diseases and Transplantation to deal with the prevention and diagnosis of coronavirus infection in patients with dialysis

General instructions

  • Please follow the basic instructions against the transmission of the Coronavirus, as indicated by the Ministry of Health, in addition to the basic instructions for controlling infection, as detailed in the instructions in the washing units on the page of the scientific journal of the Egyptian Society of Kidney Diseases and Transplantation.
  • Educating employees, patients, and companions in all sessions, with an emphasis on full commitment to that
  • Clean surfaces at appropriate intervals

Patient education

  • Provide information about COVID-19
  • Description of the actions taken by the facility to protect them
  • Education about hand hygiene, respiratory hygiene and coughing as received from general guidelines
  • How to use face masks
  • How to use tissue to cover the nose and pain when coughing or sneezing
  • Proper disposal of fabrics and contaminated materials in waste containers
  • How to perform hand hygiene

Prepare the waiting area

  • Provide waiting space for patients to sit separately from other patients from one and a half to two meters at least
  • To provide handkerchiefs and soap to wash hands when arriving directly and to cough
  • Ask patients to call in advance to report fever or respiratory symptoms before going to the washing units if symptoms are present.

Ask patients about fever or respiratory symptoms when they arrive at the facility

  • Putting a mask on patients suffering from symptoms. A face mask should be worn for the duration of their stay in the facility

Return patients with symptoms to the appropriate treatment areas as soon as possible. If this is not possible, medically settled patients should:

Sit separately from other patients, at least one meter, and listen for two meters

– Wait in a personal car or outside the facility until its turn

The patient may need to be transferred to another facility based on the patient’s clinical symptoms

Patients with symptoms during dialysis

  • Maintaining at least one and a half to two meters of separation between patients suffering from symptoms and other patients
  • Ideally, dialysis patients with dialysis will be performed in a separate room (if available) with the door closed
  • If a separate room is not available:
  • Carry out treatment at the corner or station at the end of the class
  • The patient should be separated from the nearest distance of no less than one and a half to two meters from any patient (in all directions)
  • Call immediately to report the situation to the relevant authorities.

If a dialysis facility works on dialysis of more than one patient with respiratory symptoms, consideration should be given to mobilizing these patients and caring for them together at the end of the day.

Environmental cleaning and disinfection

Routine cleaning and disinfection procedures are suitable for COVID-19

Please refer to the instructions for hemodialysis units as detailed in the scientific journal in the number of instructions

Instructions to confirm

1- Instructions for patients and companions at home

2- Instructions while heading to the hemodialysis center

3- Instructions before entering the washing unit and delivering the patient

4- Instructions during hemodialysis sessions

5- Instructions for workers in the hemodialysis unit

1- Instructions for patients and companions at home

  • All companions and patients are strictly observant of preventive methods to prevent infection
  • All companions should know that the patient with kidney failure is more likely to have complications due to their weak immunity
  • All companions must take great care in direct dealing
  • Should not be in contact with family members who suffer from high fever or respiratory symptoms such as coughing
  • Hands should be washed frequently with soap and water, and the surfaces should be cleaned at home

2- Instructions while heading to the hemodialysis center

Take the extreme precautions on the move and the use of private transportation

3- Instructions before entering the washing unit and delivering the patient

  • Take into account the measurement of temperature before entering the unit
  • Take into account any new symptoms
  • It is forbidden to move between units

4- Instructions during hemodialysis sessions

  • The temperature of all patients should be monitored upon reaching dialysis, and each patient has a separate thermometer or modern equipment.
  • Hand should be thoroughly washed with soap and water as followed by procedures or wash hands with 70% alcohol.
  • Patients should avoid meals during dialysis. They can bring comfort food like sweets to prevent hypoglycemia
  • Patients suffering from fever or respiratory symptoms should contact the dialysis unit before arrival, and they are evaluated in a room or area separate from the dialysis area, and they must be examined to detect virus infection and promptly inform the competent authorities
  • Transportation: Public transportation should not be used. Patients should arrange personal transportation and take fixed transportation methods.

Carriers and escorts must wear surgical or N95 masks all of the time.

  • All patients with fever should be examined for new viral infections, and they should be given dialysis in the last period of the day until the outbreak of the new Corona virus is excluded.

Traffic pathway to hospital admission and dialysis unit: Receipt and drop off should not be shared with other dialysis patients. You must avoid entry and exit with other patients at the same time

  • The route, method and time of transfer of dialysis personnel should be specified
  • Reserves in the dialysis unit: the patient should not be in the vicinity, and there should be a distance of not less than 6 feet between the patients, especially in the presence of symptoms in some patients and patients who suffer from high temperature
  • The treatment and waiting areas must have good air conditioning and ventilation to remove droplet particles
  • Provide a continuous place for washing hands with soap and water for a period of not less than 20 seconds and using appropriate antiseptics
  • Clean all surfaces, floors, contacts, door handles, chairs, and beds with 20% dilute chlorine solution

5- Instructions for workers in the hemodialysis unit:

  • General instructions for personal hygiene
  • Instructions to combat infection as indicated by the instructions in issuing operating instructions on the page of the scientific journal of the Egyptian Kidney Society
  • If a worker feels a high temperature, he is completely excluded from work.
