Inflammation of the middle ear

It is an inflammation of the mucous membrane that lines the middle ear, and this inflammation usually occurs with inflammation of the upper respiratory tracts

Ear infection signs and symptoms can indicate a number of conditions. It is important to get an accurate diagnosis and prompt treatment. Call your child’s doctor if:

  • Symptoms persist for more than a day

Symptoms appear in a child less than 6 months old

severe ear pain

  • An infant or child who is slightly older is sleepless or irritable after having a cold or other upper respiratory infection
  • You may notice a discharge of fluid, pus or bloody fluid from the ear

 

 The reasons

An ear infection is caused by a bacteria or virus that infects the middle ear. Sometimes this infection is caused by another illness — a cold, the flu or an allergy — that causes congestion and swelling in the nasal passages, throat and ear canal.

 

Complications

Most ear infections don’t cause long-term complications. But frequent ear infections can cause serious complications:

Delayed development or speech

ruptured eardrum

 

Protection

The following tips may reduce the risk of ear infections:

  • Preventing colds and other diseases

Avoid passive smoking

If you are artificially feeding your baby, put your baby in an upright position

Talk to your doctor about vaccinations
